How often have we heard the promise of easy yokes and light burdens without truly understanding it, Matthew 11:28-30? Despite what we may have imagined the text has nothing to do with a harness formed out of some magical alloy.

It is a rare and difficult thing to find two perfectly matched plow animals. One ox or horse may be larger, stronger, older. The other could be smaller, younger, or weaker. These unequal matches can lead to squirrely paths and uneven rows. So, farmers have adjusted the tension on the yokes to ensure the stronger more able animal bears the bulk of the burden.
If we will accept it, our yoke will be easy because ethe One who is larger and stronger than us will be walking by our side bearing the weight and making sure our paths are straight. When we obey the demands of this world to pull away from freedom and back to the heavy yoke, we are becoming less like Him. The Lord invites us to be free because He is free. We are meant to be free because we are meant to be like Him. We are not meant to carry the weight of this world alone, so our Creator continues to call us closer to Him. That's Worth Remembering.
